The Problem with Goals – and the Surprising Shift That Changes Everything

Why trying harder might be the very thing holding you back

We’ve all been told the same story:
If you want to succeed, set a goal and go after it with everything you’ve got.

Write it down. Visualize it. Make a plan. Push through the obstacles. Be relentless.

It’s such a common belief that most people never even question it.

But let me ask you something honestly:
Has it really worked for you?

Think back over the goals you’ve set in your life.
How many have you actually achieved?
And of those, how many gave you true, lasting fulfillment?

What about the ones you didn’t reach? Are you still chasing them - or have you quietly replaced them with newer, shinier versions?

Here’s something most people are afraid to admit:
Goal-setting, as it’s usually taught, isn’t working. Not in a meaningful, sustainable way.

And yet instead of questioning the method, we usually blame ourselves.

We assume we didn’t want it enough. We weren’t focused enough. We didn’t try hard enough.

But what if the real problem isn’t your discipline…
It’s your direction?

Why We Stay Hooked on Goals

There are a few reasons we keep going back to goal-setting, even when it doesn’t serve us:

  • It gives us a sense of control.
  • It fills the gap when we don’t know what else to do.
  • It feels like progress, even when nothing’s changing.
  • It’s what everyone else is doing.

Those reasons are understandable. But they’re also misleading.

Because you can’t force yourself into the life that’s right for you.

“But Liam… If I Don’t Set Goals, What Do I Do?”

Your first reaction to this might be:

“Okay, but if I don’t set goals and push toward them… what do I do? Just sit around and hope things magically happen?”

It’s a fair concern. We’ve been trained to believe that if we’re not pushing forward, we’re going backwards.

But here’s the truth:

When you stop forcing life, you don’t become passive.
You become productive in a completely different way.

You stop acting from fear.
You stop second-guessing, overthinking, and trying to figure it all out.
And you start doing what actually matters - naturally, instinctively, and with surprising ease.

Not because you’re hyped up.
Not because you’re being “disciplined.”
But because you’re no longer wasting all your energy fighting yourself.

What Happens When You Stop Fighting?

Most of what holds us back in life isn’t a lack of drive. It’s resistance.

We resist doing the very things that would move us forward - not because we don’t know what they are, but because we’re afraid.

  • Afraid of failure.
  • Afraid of wasting time.
  • Afraid it won’t work.
  • Afraid of being hurt.

But when you start trusting the intelligence within you - what I call your natural design - you begin to move in a completely different way.

You act not because you’ve planned it out to the letter, but because it feels like the right time.
You step forward not with effort, but with clarity.
You stop letting fear have the final word.

Let me ask you something:

If you knew - without a doubt - that there was an intelligence inside you designed to make you thrive…
Would you still hesitate?
Would you keep overthinking?
Would you keep chasing?
Or would you start listening - and simply act?

Let Life Move You

While your mind is busy writing goals, life might already be pointing you in another direction.

There’s something inside you - call it instinct, life force, or intuition - that already knows what to do. It doesn’t guide you through bullet points or vision boards. It guides you through what feels clear, curious, open, and alive.

The problem isn’t a lack of direction.
It’s mistaking control for clarity.

So What’s the Alternative?

Instead of asking, “What do I want to achieve this year?”
Try asking:

“What’s trying to happen in my life right now?”

Pay attention to what feels light. What flows. What sparks energy or interest.

Don’t try to wrestle life into submission.
Start listening to what’s already unfolding - and move with it.

This isn’t fantasy.
It’s not laziness.
It’s not giving up.

It’s biology.
It’s how nature works.
It’s how you were designed to thrive.

It’s Not Reckless. It’s Real.

Living this way doesn’t mean rushing blindly into things - or holding back (both of these are your response to fear).

It means responding when the moment is right.
It means knowing the difference between fear and instinct - and choosing instinct.

And when life doesn’t unfold the way you expected?

It’s not a failure. It’s feedback.

It’s just your Survival Brain trying to pull you back into old control patterns - trying to convince you that your expectations are more important than your natural flow.

But now you know better.

You don’t need to chase your life.
You just need to stop interfering with it.

So just do the next thing that presents itself - without hesitation.

It will all work out.

Nature wouldn’t have it any other way.

Final Thought

You don’t need more pressure.
You don’t need more plans.
You don’t need more hype.

What you need is less interference.

Because when you stop trying to force what’s wrong…
You finally make space to allow what’s right.

And that’s when everything begins to shift.
