The Affirmation Illusion

I spent years doing affirmations.

I wrote them out. I spoke them aloud. I stared into mirrors and whispered things I didn’t believe: “I am confident.” “I am rich.” “I have a happy and fulfilling marriage.” “I have solved x problem in my life.”

Every guru I followed insisted this was how you “reprogram your subconscious.”They said: “Repeat it until it becomes true.”

So I did. Repeatedly. Religiously. And you know what happened?

Nothing.

No sudden success. No inner shift. No transformation.

In fact, the more I repeated things I didn’t believe, the more I felt like a fraud.

Why Affirmations Don’t Work the Way You’re Told

The theory behind affirmations is that repetition “imprints” the subconscious. But let’s be honest: if that were true, we’d all be thriving by now.

The truth is, your brain doesn’t just accept words. It responds to states - not statements.

If you're in a state of anxiety and repeat, “I am calm,” your brain doesn’t align with the phrase - it rejects it. It sees it as denial. A threat to its reality. And the more you try to overwrite your feelings with language, the more resistance you create.

Real change doesn’t come from layering new words over old fears. It comes from shifting your brain into a new state of being - from stress to calm, from fear to flow.

That’s not something you say. That’s something you allow.

Why the Idea Still Sells

So why do self-help leaders keep pushing affirmations?

Simple: because they’re easy to sell and sound empowering. They require no deep work. No risk. No change in how you live or think. They promise magic through language alone. And that’s seductive - especially for people in pain.

But seductive isn’t the same as effective.

What Works Instead

If you want real transformation, skip the mantras.Instead, do this:

  • Notice your state. Are you tense? Anxious? Trying to control?

  • Let go of trying to “fix” yourself with thought. Your brain is not broken. It’s just been misused.

  • Allow your natural state to emerge. The part of you that knows how to thrive is already wired in. You don’t have to create confidence - you just need to stop blocking it.

When you shift the state, the thoughts change automatically. You don’t have to repeat, “I am successful.”You just feel successful - because your brain is now working the way it was designed to.

Final Thought

Affirmations are like shouting over a fire alarm instead of turning it off. They don’t solve the problem - they just add noise.

I don’t say this to criticize those who teach them - I say it because I’ve lived it.And I know what it’s like to put your hope in something that doesn’t deliver.

There’s a better way.And it begins by trusting your brain - not trying to trick it.
